They were covered in dust and satisfied that the buildings would hold when they finally headed toward Rekker. The small city of Horcross was going to be the new home of experimental magic. All it needed was a tenant.
Chapter Eight
Zzara stood in the new workroom in Horcross, and she looked toward the wall where Aeli was going to make her entrance.
Eltrinia leaned back against the new counter, and she ate an apple. “I think she is taking too long.”
“Well, I have read up on doorways between places, and she has to make sure that it is physically stable enough to withstand a lot of traffic.” Zzara flipped through one of the spell books that she had brought with her in Eltrinia’s teleportation. “Here. It goes through the anchoring that has to be done on either side, so we have our stones embedded in the wall, and she had hers in place before we came here. It feels long because she has to chant all of this while flicking the wall with the spell.”
“Magic is messy.”
Zzara looked at the chant, and she began to mumble the words before she heard an echoing voice in her head. She went through the chant, and the wall bent and buckled, but it did not open. “Damn.”
“Is there anything you can do?” Eltrinia set her apple core down on the counter.
Zzara lifted her left hand to her lips and bit the edge of her thumb. She flicked her hand toward the wall, and it bent and buckled, melting away at the points where her blood had struck until the archway was open and Aeli’s workshop was visible.
Zzara put her hand to her mouth, and she licked at the bite wound.
Eltrinia asked, “What the hell was that?”
Zzara pulled her hand away for a moment and checked the injury. “The blood of a blood dragon can be used to substitute for any completed potion or spell, provided that the dragon is alive. It was a little tidbit that was in the journal of a blood dragon who died at the age of twenty-four.”
Aeli was gathering supplies.
Eltrinia blinked. “Why did she die so young?”
“She was bled to death. My blood can also be used to heal dragons, humans, shifters, anything. There is also the potential for mind control. A drop of my blood in the mouth of a healthy dragon, and there is the chance that I can control the actions of that dragon.”
Aeli stepped carefully through the doorway. “For how long?”
“As long as I want. I am very dangerous in pieces.” Zzara chuckled.
Eltrinia frowned. “Wait, so you can actually be used in parts?”
“I can. My blood, bones, and flesh all have the potential to amplify or mimic magic. The only sticking point is that I have to be alive while it is being used.”
Aeli put an armload of items on the worktable. “So, you made it through those books?”
“I am a quick reader.”
Eltrinia grinned. “Me too.”
Aeli looked around and nodded. “Well, the link feels stable, so let’s get moving, ladies.
